Towards a Physiological Model of User Interruptability

چکیده
User interruptability has become an important topic of study in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). However, automatically determining the availability of users is still problematic. In this paper, we present a preliminary study of the use of physiological measurements for predicting user interruptability status. We measured Heart Rate Variability (HRV) and Electromyogram (EMG) signals whilst users performed a variety of tasks; including reading, solving word puzzles, mental arithmetic, typing, and playing a racing game. Results show high correlations for both HRV (r = 0.96) and EMG (r = 0.85) with user self-reports of interruptability. We combined these two measures into a single linear model, which predicted user interruptability with a combined r of 0.95, or 95% of the variance. Please note that our model, at this stage, describes interruptability across users rather than per individual. We describe an application of our findings in the Physiological Weblog, or ’Plog, a system that uses our model for automating online messaging status.

The Physiologically Attentive User Interface Towards A Physiological Model of Interruptability
This thesis addresses the problem of managing interruptions from computing devices and appliances in a Ubiquitous Computing (UbiComp) environment. One way of approaching this problem is through the use of Attentive User Interfaces (AUIs). AUIs sense the users’ attention for objects and people in their environment, in order to avoid today’s ubiquitous patterns of interruption. However, current A...
متن کاملDirect Interruptability Prediction and Scenario-based Evaluation of Wearable Devices: Towards Reliable Interruptability Predictions
In this paper we introduce the approach of direct interruptability inference from accelerometer and audio data and show that it provides highly accurate and robust predictions. Furthermore, we argue that scenarios are central for evaluating the performance of interruptability predicting devices and prove it on our setup. We also demonstrate that scenarios provide the foundation for avoiding mis...
متن کاملContext-Aware Notification for Wearable Computing
In this paper we propose to use context information obtained from body–worn sensors to mediate notifications for a wearable computer. In particular we introduce a model which uses two axes, namely personal and social interruptability of the user in order to decide both whether or not to notify the user and to decide which notification modality to use. Rather than to model and recognize the comp...
متن کاملEstimating User Interruptability using Contextual Parameters and Machine-Learning Algorithms
As devices, computer applications, and services have become increasingly ubiquitous in diverse and ever-changing environments, a higher demand has been put on the user to manage and use them efficiently. To facilitate these tasks, we can introduce awareness of some areas of user context into these devices and let them do more of the work for us. However, at this time, no good understanding of w...

Rather than to model and recognize the complete context o...
